About Nlnetlabs Unbound

CVE-2026-82717 affects Nlnetlabs Unbound, a product from Nlnetlabs. Before acting, confirm where Nlnetlabs Unbound runs in your estate, who owns it and whether it is reachable from the internet, because exposure decides real risk more than the score alone.

What the flaw is

In plain terms: In NLnet Labs Unbound up to and including 1.26.0, a vulnerability was found in that can progressively corrupt heap memory and under certain systems and compilation options could lead to remote code execution. The vulnerability starts when CNAME synthesis during an upstream response needs to enforce(rewrite) a max TTL value in the packet buffer. Coupled with a compression pointer that points to the overwritten value and invalidates the domain name, it leads to an error path that does not properly move the buffer position and allows for the heap buffer overflow. Since this is heavily reliant on heap memory layout, results are memory corruption that eventually leads to a crash and under specific systems and compilation options remote code execution.

The weakness class is Heap Buffer Overflow. A write past the end of a heap buffer corrupts nearby memory.

Based on its CVSS vector, the flaw can be reached over the network, needs no login, and needs no user interaction. Apply the vendor fix and confirm exposure on internet facing and business critical assets first.

How to detect it

  • Inventory every instance of Nlnetlabs Unbound and record the running version against the affected range above.
  • Check external attack surface scans for internet facing instances of the component.
  • Review logs on affected systems for unusual requests, errors or new processes around the vulnerable function.
  • Confirm with an authenticated vulnerability scan once your scanner has a check for this CVE.

How to fix it

  • Apply the fixed version of Nlnetlabs Unbound named in the vendor advisory.
  • If patching must wait, restrict network access to the affected service and put it behind authentication or a web application firewall rule.
  • Rescan after the change to prove the exposure is gone, then close the ticket.

CTEM action plan

CVE-2026-81642
Nlnetlabs Unbound

In NLnet Labs Unbound up to and including 1.26.0, a vulnerability was found in the DNSSEC validator that enables denial of service and possible remote code execution as a result of digesting DNSKEYs. A DNSKEY with an owner compression pointer to its own RDATA can overflow the digest buffer. Remote code execution is possible through attacker controlled data. An adversary can exploit the vulnerability by controlling a malicious zone and querying a vulnerable Unbound.

CVE-2026-18664
Nlnetlabs Nsd

When ranges are used for access control (i.e. of the form 1.2.3.4-1.2.3.25), because NSD wrongly compares the IP address with the range on little endian systems, IPs that were meant to be allowed may be denied, and, IPs that were meant to be denied access could be allowed. An IPv4 address is compared with IPv4 ranges as unsigned 32 bit numbers directly with the endianness of the host, but the values to compare are in network byte order (big-endian). With IPv6 addresses the comparison is done in 4 times a unsigned 32 bit number comparison, again with the endianness of the host where all values are actually in network bye order.
