About Openimageio
CVE-2026-43904 affects Openimageio, a product from Openimageio. Before acting, confirm where Openimageio runs in your estate, who owns it and whether it is reachable from the internet, because exposure decides real risk more than the score alone.
What the flaw is
In plain terms: OpenImageIO is a toolset for reading, writing, and manipulating image files of any image file format relevant to VFX / animation. Prior to 3.0.18.0 and 3.1.13.0, softimageinput.cpp:469 (mixed RLE) and :345 (pure RLE) do not clamp the run length to remaining scanline width before writing pixels. The raw packet path (line 403) correctly clamps with std::min, but RLE paths skip this check. A crafted .pic file causes heap overflow up to 65535 bytes. This vulnerability is fixed in 3.0.18.0 and 3.1.13.0.
The weakness class is Out of Bounds Write. The program writes past the end of a buffer, a common path to code execution.
Based on its CVSS vector, the flaw needs local or adjacent access, needs no login, and relies on a user taking an action. Apply the vendor fix and confirm exposure on internet facing and business critical assets first.

How to detect it
- Inventory every instance of Openimageio and record the running version against the affected range above.
- Check external attack surface scans for internet facing instances of the component.
- Review logs on affected systems for unusual requests, errors or new processes around the vulnerable function.
- Confirm with an authenticated vulnerability scan once your scanner has a check for this CVE.
How to fix it
- Apply the fixed version of Openimageio named in the vendor advisory.
- If patching must wait, restrict network access to the affected service and put it behind authentication or a web application firewall rule.
- Rescan after the change to prove the exposure is gone, then close the ticket.
CTEM action plan
| CTEM stage | What to do for this CVE |
|---|---|
| Scope | Add every business service that depends on Openimageio to the current CTEM cycle. |
| Discover | Find all instances, including shadow and cloud deployments, and record versions and exposure. |
| Prioritize | Rank using EPSS and CVSS together with asset exposure and business impact. |
| Validate | Confirm the flaw is reachable and exploitable in your environment and that compensating controls work. |
| Mobilize | Assign the fix to the asset owner with a due date matched to the priority, then verify closure. |

OpenImageIO is a toolset for reading, writing, and manipulating image files of any image file format relevant to VFX / animation. Prior to 3.0.18.0 and 3.1.13.0, a heap-based buffer overflow in the HEIF decoder of OpenImageIO allows out-of-bounds writes via crafted images due to a subimage metadata mismatch, leading to memory corruption and potential code execution. This vulnerability is fixed in 3.0.18.0 and 3.1.13.0.
OpenImageIO is a toolset for reading, writing, and manipulating image files of any image file format relevant to VFX / animation. Prior to 3.0.18.0 and 3.1.13.0, jpeg2000input.cpp:395 computes buffer size as const int bufsize = w * h * ch * buffer_bpp using signed 32-bit arithmetic. When the product exceeds INT_MAX, the result wraps to 0 or a small value. m_buf.resize() allocates an undersized buffer, and subsequent pixel write loops cause heap overflow. Conditional on USE_OPENJPH build flag. This vulnerability is fixed in 3.0.18.0 and 3.1.13.0.
OpenImageIO is a toolset for reading, writing, and manipulating image files of any image file format relevant to VFX / animation. Prior to 3.0.18.0 and 3.1.13.0, sgiinput.cpp:265,274 use OIIO_DASSERT for bounds checking in the RLE decode loop. In release builds, OIIO_DASSERT compiles to ((void)sizeof(x)) (dassert.h:210), making all bounds checks no-ops. A crafted .sgi file with RLE count exceeding scanline width causes heap buffer overflow and crash. This vulnerability is fixed in 3.0.18.0 and 3.1.13.0.
Out-of-bounds Write, Buffer Copy without Checking Size of Input ('Classic Buffer Overflow') vulnerability in azerothcore azerothcore-wotlk (deps/zlib modules). This vulnerability is associated with program files inflate.C. This issue affects azerothcore-wotlk: through v4.0.0.
There is a possible out of bounds write due to a missing bounds check. This could lead to local escalation of privilege with no additional execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation.
Kitty is a cross-platform GPU based terminal. In versions 0.46.2 and below, the handle_compose_command() function in kitty/graphics.c performs bounds validation on composition offsets using unsigned 32-bit arithmetic that is subject to integer wrapping, potentially leading to Heap Buffer Over-Read/Write. An attacker who can write escape sequences to a kitty terminal (e.g., via a malicious file, SSH login banner, or piped content) can supply crafted x_offset/y_offset values that pass the bounds check after wrapping but cause massive out-of-bounds heap memory access in compose_rectangles(). No user interaction is required. No non-default configuration is required. The attacker only needs the ability to produce output in a kitty terminal window. This issue has been fixed in version 0.47.0.
