About Thecodingmachine Gotenberg
CVE-2026-40280 affects Thecodingmachine Gotenberg, a product from Thecodingmachine. Before acting, confirm where Thecodingmachine Gotenberg runs in your estate, who owns it and whether it is reachable from the internet, because exposure decides real risk more than the score alone.
What the flaw is
In plain terms: Gotenberg is an API-based document conversion tool. In versions 8.30.1 and earlier, the default private-IP deny-lists for the --webhook-deny-list and --api-download-from-deny-list flags use a case-sensitive regular expression (^https?://) to match URL schemes. Because Go's net/url.Parse() normalizes the scheme to lowercase before establishing the outbound TCP connection, an attacker can bypass the deny-list by simply capitalizing part of the URL scheme (e.g., HTTP://, HTTPS://, or Http://). This allows unauthenticated requests to reach internal network services, including private IP ranges, loopback addresses, and cloud instance metadata endpoints such as HTTP://169.254.169.254/latest/meta-data/. This bypasses the same security control that was patched in CVE-2026-27018. This issue has been fixed in version 8.31.0.
The weakness class is Server Side Request Forgery. The server can be made to send requests to internal or arbitrary systems.
Based on its CVSS vector, the flaw can be reached over the network, needs no login, and needs no user interaction. Apply the vendor fix and confirm exposure on internet facing and business critical assets first.

How to detect it
- Inventory every instance of Thecodingmachine Gotenberg and record the running version against the affected range above.
- Check external attack surface scans for internet facing instances of the component.
- Review logs on affected systems for unusual requests, errors or new processes around the vulnerable function.
- Confirm with an authenticated vulnerability scan once your scanner has a check for this CVE.
How to fix it
- Apply the fixed version of Thecodingmachine Gotenberg named in the vendor advisory.
- If patching must wait, restrict network access to the affected service and put it behind authentication or a web application firewall rule.
- Rescan after the change to prove the exposure is gone, then close the ticket.
CTEM action plan
| CTEM stage | What to do for this CVE |
|---|---|
| Scope | Add every business service that depends on Thecodingmachine Gotenberg to the current CTEM cycle. |
| Discover | Find all instances, including shadow and cloud deployments, and record versions and exposure. |
| Prioritize | Rank using EPSS and CVSS together with asset exposure and business impact. |
| Validate | Confirm the flaw is reachable and exploitable in your environment and that compensating controls work. |
| Mobilize | Assign the fix to the asset owner with a due date matched to the priority, then verify closure. |

Gotenberg is a Docker-powered stateless API for PDF files. In versions 8.30.1 and earlier, the metadata write endpoint validates metadata keys for control characters but leaves metadata values unsanitized. A newline character in a metadata value splits the ExifTool stdin line into two separate arguments, allowing injection of arbitrary ExifTool pseudo-tags such as -FileName, -Directory, -SymLink, and -HardLink. This is a bypass of the incomplete key-sanitization fix introduced in v8.30.1. An unauthenticated attacker can rename or move any PDF being processed to an arbitrary path in the container filesystem, overwrite arbitrary files, or create symlinks and hard links at arbitrary paths.
Gotenberg is an API for converting document formats. Prior to version 8.29.0, the fix introduced for CVE-2024-21527 can be bypassed using mixed-case or uppercase URL schemes. This issue has been patched in version 8.29.0.
FastGPT is an AI Agent building platform. Prior to version 4.14.9.5, the FastGPT HTTP tools testing endpoint (/api/core/app/httpTools/runTool) is exposed without any authentication. This endpoint acts as a full HTTP proxy — it accepts a user-supplied baseUrl, toolPath, HTTP method, custom headers, and body, then makes a server-side HTTP request and returns the complete response to the caller. This issue has been patched in version 4.14.9.5.
FastMCP is a Pythonic way to build MCP servers and clients. Prior to version 3.2.0, the OpenAPIProvider in FastMCP exposes internal APIs to MCP clients by parsing OpenAPI specifications. The RequestDirector class is responsible for constructing HTTP requests to the backend service. A vulnerability exists in the _build_url() method. When an OpenAPI operation defines path parameters (e.g., /api/v1/users/{user_id}), the system directly substitutes parameter values into the URL template string without URL-encoding. Subsequently, urllib.parse.urljoin() resolves the final URL. Since urljoin() interprets ../ sequences as directory traversal, an attacker controlling a path parameter can perform path traversal attacks to escape the intended API prefix and access arbitrary backend endpoints. This results in authenticated SSRF, as requests are sent with the authorization headers configured in the MCP provider. This issue has been patched in version 3.2.0.
