CVE-2026-120436 Overview

Netpbm before 10.86.51, 11.x before 11.02.30, and 11.03 before 11.15.08 contains an integer overflow in jbigtopnm that causes heap buffer overflow when computing output buffer size. Attackers can supply a crafted multi-plane JBIG file with large header dimensions so jbg_dec_merge_planes() overflows the undersized buffer, causing crashes or potentially code execution.

Critical Impact

Local or adjacent, unauthenticated attackers who persuade a user to act can exploit this Integer Overflow in Netpbm. The CVSS base score is 8.5 (High).

Technical Details for CVE-2026-120436

Vulnerability Analysis

CVE-2026-120436 is a Integer Overflow weakness (CWE-190: Integer Overflow) in Netpbm. Based on its CVSS vector, the flaw needs local or adjacent access, needs no login, and relies on a user taking an action. A number wraps around and leads to wrong size calculations.

With a CVSS base score of 8.5, apply the vendor fix and confirm exposure on internet facing and business critical assets first.

Root Cause

The weakness is classified as CWE-190: Integer Overflow. A number wraps around and leads to wrong size calculations.

Attack Vector

Based on the CVSS vector, the flaw needs local or adjacent access, needs no login, and relies on a user taking an action. Attack complexity is low complexity.

No exploitation in the wild is confirmed by CISA at the time of the last update. Check the references below for any vendor or researcher proof of concept.

Detection Methods for CVE-2026-120436

Detection Strategies

  • Inventory every instance of Netpbm and compare the running version with the affected range above.
  • Check external attack surface scans for internet facing instances of the component.
  • Run an authenticated vulnerability scan once your scanner ships a check for this CVE.

Monitoring Recommendations

  • Forward Netpbm application, access and audit logs to your SIEM for retrospective hunting.
  • Alert on new processes, configuration changes or outbound connections from the affected service.
  • Track the vendor advisory and the CISA KEV catalog for changes in exploitation status.

How to Mitigate CVE-2026-120436

Immediate Actions Required

  • Apply the fixed version of Netpbm named in the vendor advisory.
  • Prioritize internet facing and business critical instances first.
  • Rescan after the change to confirm the exposure is closed.

Patch Information

Use the fixed version listed in the vendor advisory for Netpbm.

Workarounds

  • If patching must wait, restrict network access to the affected service and place it behind authentication or a web application firewall rule.

CVE-2026-33642
Kovidgoyal Kitty

Kitty is a cross-platform GPU based terminal. In versions 0.46.2 and below, the handle_compose_command() function in kitty/graphics.c performs bounds validation on composition offsets using unsigned 32-bit arithmetic that is subject to integer wrapping, potentially leading to Heap Buffer Over-Read/Write. An attacker who can write escape sequences to a kitty terminal (e.g., via a malicious file, SSH login banner, or piped content) can supply crafted x_offset/y_offset values that pass the bounds check after wrapping but cause massive out-of-bounds heap memory access in compose_rectangles(). No user interaction is required. No non-default configuration is required. The attacker only needs the ability to produce output in a kitty terminal window. This issue has been fixed in version 0.47.0.

CVE-2026-30909
Timlegge Crypt

Crypt::NaCl::Sodium versions through 2.002 for Perl has potential integer overflows. bin2hex, encrypt, aes256gcm_encrypt_afternm and seal functions do not check that output size will be less than SIZE_MAX, which could lead to integer wraparound causing an undersized output buffer. Encountering this issue is unlikely as the message length would need to be very large. For bin2hex() the bin_len would have to be > SIZE_MAX / 2 For encrypt() the msg_len would need to be > SIZE_MAX - 16U For aes256gcm_encrypt_afternm() the msg_len would need to be > SIZE_MAX - 16U For seal() the enc_len would need to be > SIZE_MAX - 64U
