About Neutrinolabs Xrdp
CVE-2025-68670 affects Neutrinolabs Xrdp, a product from Neutrinolabs. Before acting, confirm where Neutrinolabs Xrdp runs in your estate, who owns it and whether it is reachable from the internet, because exposure decides real risk more than the score alone.
What the flaw is
In plain terms: xrdp is an open source RDP server. xrdp before v0.10.5 contains an unauthenticated stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability. The issue stems from improper bounds checking when processing user domain information during the connection sequence. If exploited, the vulnerability could allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on the target system. The vulnerability allows an attacker to overwrite the stack buffer and the return address, which could theoretically be used to redirect the execution flow. The impact of this vulnerability is lessened if a compiler flag has been used to build the xrdp executable with stack canary protection. If this is the case, a second vulnerability would need to be used to leak the stack canary value. Upgrade to version 0.10.5 to receive a patch. Additionally, do not rely on stack canary protection on production systems.
The weakness class is Stack Buffer Overflow. A write past the end of a stack buffer can corrupt control data.
Based on its CVSS vector, the flaw can be reached over the network, needs no login, and needs no user interaction. Apply the vendor fix and confirm exposure on internet facing and business critical assets first.

How to detect it
- Inventory every instance of Neutrinolabs Xrdp and record the running version against the affected range above.
- Check external attack surface scans for internet facing instances of the component.
- Review logs on affected systems for unusual requests, errors or new processes around the vulnerable function.
- Confirm with an authenticated vulnerability scan once your scanner has a check for this CVE.
How to fix it
- Apply the fixed version of Neutrinolabs Xrdp named in the vendor advisory.
- If patching must wait, restrict network access to the affected service and put it behind authentication or a web application firewall rule.
- Rescan after the change to prove the exposure is gone, then close the ticket.
CTEM action plan
| CTEM stage | What to do for this CVE |
|---|---|
| Scope | Add every business service that depends on Neutrinolabs Xrdp to the current CTEM cycle. |
| Discover | Find all instances, including shadow and cloud deployments, and record versions and exposure. |
| Prioritize | Rank using EPSS and CVSS together with asset exposure and business impact. |
| Validate | Confirm the flaw is reachable and exploitable in your environment and that compensating controls work. |
| Mobilize | Assign the fix to the asset owner with a due date matched to the priority, then verify closure. |

xrdp is an open source RDP server. In versions 0.10.6 and prior, when an authenticated user session is initialized using the Xvnc backend over UNIX domain sockets, the Xvnc process is launched with insufficient authentication mechanisms. A local authenticated attacker could exploit this vulnerability to bypass intended session isolation, allowing them to unauthorizedly view or control the active desktop sessions of other users on the same system. Users using other backends, such as xorgxrdp or Xvnc over TCP sockets, are not affected. This issue has been fixed in version 0.10.6.1.
xrdp is an open source RDP server. Versions 0.10.6 and prior contain an integer overflow vulnerability when processing screen update messages within the vnc-any connection mode. A malicious remote VNC server can send crafted image dimensions that cause an integer overflow during memory buffer size calculation, resulting in an undersized allocation. Subsequent processing of the incoming image data using the original oversized parameters leads to an out-of-bounds read. An unauthenticated remote attacker could exploit this flaw to disclose sensitive information from the heap memory or cause a denial of service (DoS) via a process crash. This issue has been fixed in version 0.10.6.1.
xrdp is an open source RDP server. Versions through 0.10.5 have a heap-based buffer overflow in the EGFX (graphics dynamic virtual channel) implementation due to insufficient validation of client-controlled size parameters, allowing an out-of-bounds write via crafted PDUs. Pre-authentication exploitation can crash the process, while post-authentication exploitation may achieve remote code execution. This issue has been fixed in version 0.10.6. If users are unable to immediately update, they should run xrdp as a non-privileged user (default since 0.10.2) to limit the impact of successful exploitation.
xrdp is an open source RDP server. Versions through 0.10.5 have an out-of-bounds read vulnerability in the pre-authentication RDP message parsing logic. A remote, unauthenticated attacker can trigger this flaw by sending a specially crafted sequence of packets during the initial connection phase. This vulnerability results from insufficient validation of input buffer lengths before processing dynamic channel communication. Successful exploitation can lead to a denial-of-service (DoS) condition via a process crash or potential disclosure of sensitive information from the service's memory space. This issue has been fixed in version 0.10.6.
xrdp is an open source RDP server. Versions through 0.10.5 contain an out-of-bounds read vulnerability during the RDP capability exchange phase. The issue occurs when memory is accessed before validating the remaining buffer length. A remote, unauthenticated attacker can trigger this vulnerability by sending a specially crafted Confirm Active PDU. Successful exploitation could lead to a denial of service (process crash) or potential disclosure of sensitive information from the process memory. This issue has been fixed in version 0.10.6.
xrdp is an open source RDP server. Versions through 0.10.5 contain a heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability in the NeutrinoRDP module. When proxying RDP sessions from xrdp to another server, the module fails to properly validate the size of reassembled fragmented virtual channel data against its allocated memory buffer. A malicious downstream RDP server (or an attacker capable of performing a Man-in-the-Middle attack) could exploit this flaw to cause memory corruption, potentially leading to a Denial of Service (DoS) or Remote Code Execution (RCE). The NeutrinoRDP module is not built by default. This vulnerability only affects environments where the module has been explicitly compiled and enabled. Users can verify if the module is built by checking for --enable-neutrinordp in the output of the xrdp -v command. This issue has been fixed in version 0.10.6.
